“…. some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons” (1 Timothy 4:1).
Paul the Apostle cautions the churches that in these final days satan will send more deceiving spirits to cheat and deceive the children of God.“….but exhort one another daily, while it is called ‘Today,’ lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin” (Hebrews 3:13). “But be doers of the word and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves” (James 1:22)
Recently a pastor’s wife from Bangalore shared a matter with me with tears. She said, “Sir, my husband was doing God’s work in a very good manner. I do not know how he was suddenly deceived by satan. Nowadays, he has resorted to false preaching. He preaches that one can lead his life in any way he likes. According to him, it is enough if one clings on to the grace of God. He says that the grace will forgive the sins of the past and sins to be committed in future also. Consuming alcohol is not a sin. Illicit relationships are also not sins, he says. He has thus brought in some false and modern preaching talking about Super Grace, Hyper-Grace and so on. There is a big commotion among the believers of the church. Most of them have left the church and have gone elsewhere.
What is meant by ‘deceiving’? Presenting a false thing as though it is true and genuine is what is called as ‘deceiving’. It is doing something wrong to you but falsely focussing as though it is done for your welfare. In the very beginning, Eve said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate” (Genesis 3:13). God had already cautioned not to eat the fruit from the knowledge of good and evil tree and if they eat they may die.
But satan tempted saying, “No. You will not die. If you eat this fruit, your eyes will be opened and you will be like God.” Adam and Eve were separated from God for the reason that they believed that spirit of deceiving of satan. They were chased out of the Garden of Eden.
How will be the deceiving spirit? While a sheep is a prey for the wolf, how could it be a truth when it is said that “a wolf felt sad on seeing a sheep getting drenched? A wolf will never sympathise a sheep but it will only feed on them. Some people who possess this deceiving spirit will praise you limitlessly and they will pretend as though they take all the strain on themselves for your sake and as though they live in the world only for your sake. This is what deceiving is.
Just see how Laban appreciated Jacob when he visited Laban’s home for the first time. He promised to give Rachel in marriage to him but on the contrary gave Leah. He made Jacob to be his slave asking him to rear his sheep. Dear children of God, be cautious against the trap of deceiving.
To meditate: “For many deceivers have gone out into the world who do not confess Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist” (II John 1:7).
