“Then He brought him outside and said, “Look now toward heaven, and count the stars if you are able to number them.” And He said to him, “So shall your descendants be” (Genesis 15:5).
God is one who blesses you. The first thing God did after fulfilling the job of creation was to bless Adam and Eve. In response to this blessing, the world population has gone beyond 700 crores. From one pair of couple it has exploded to 300 crores. See how he has multiplied the mankind! Today you stay as the people of God and also as His heir. Will He not bless you with compassion? The mercy and compassion He has placed on you are very great.
God blesses some people wholeheartedly and joyfully. For example, Abraham blessed Isaac unconditionally by giving all that he had to Isaac wholeheartedly. But when Isaac thought of blessing his eldest son Isa, he asked him to hunt and cook the best food for him so that he could bless him. But even before Isa could bring the good food, Jacob won the race in bringing it and took away the blessings including the birthright.
There are certain blessings in the Scripture which are conditional in nature. “Now it shall come to pass, if you diligently obey the voice of the Lord your God, to observe carefully all His commandments which I command you today, that the Lord your God will set you high above all nations of the earth. And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you because you obey the voice of the Lord your God” (Deuteronomy 28:1, 2).
The reason behind God blessing Abraham is that Abraham listened carefully to the words of God and obeyed Him. He placed his only son on the altar for sacrifice to God. So, God willed to bless Abraham in three ways. 1. As per his affirmation that he would bless them like the sands of the seashore, Lord blessed the descendents of Sarah, 2. He blessed Ishmael son of Hagar as He had promised Abraham that He would bless him like the dust of the earth. 3. Like the numerous stars in the sky, you the descendents of Christ would be blessed with all the blessings of the high. You are blessed as the descendents of Abraham and of Christ.
“Therefore know that only those who are of faith are sons of Abraham. And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel to Abraham beforehand, saying, “In you all the nations shall be blessed.” So, then those who are of faith are blessed with believing Abraham” (Galatians 3:7-9).
To meditate: “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ” (Ephesians 1:3).
