“Blessed is she who believed, for there will be a fulfilment of those things which were told her from the Lord” (Luke 1:45)
In the Scripture, we read about the blessed men in more than one hundred instances. But there are just one or two instances where we read about blessed women. Leah called her as the blessed (Genesis 30:13). A virtual woman is a blessed one. “Her children rise up and call her blessed” (Proverbs 31:28). Similarly, Mary the mother of Jesus also said, “For He has regarded the lowly state of His maidservant; for behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed” (Luke 1:48).
There are two important reasons for Mary being called as a blessed woman. First is her humbleness. When speaking about her humility she said, “He has regarded the lowly state of His maidservant.”
She humbled before God and committed saying, “Behold the maidservant of the Lord! Let it be to me according to your word” (Luke 1:38). Many people think that ‘humbleness’ is shame or loss of respect. But the Scripture repeatedly says “gives grace to the humble” (Proverbs 3:34, I Peter 5:5). If you explore the life of Mary, you cannot find any Spiritual pride or loftiness in it. She did not even allow the pride in saying ‘mother of God’ enter into her mind.
It was she through whom The Son of God came to the world and did thousands of miracles here and Mary was humbly serving Christ never taking the pride that it was she through whom He had come to the world. She never tried to gain fame through Christ and she did not advertise also that she was the mother of Christ but behaved with humbleness before God as well as the people. Is it not a characteristic which God likes?
Secondly, Mary had the ‘holy faith’ in her. Mary perfectly believed God in everything. Elizabeth, mother of John the Baptist saw the faith in Mary greeted her saying “Blessed is she who believed, for there will be a fulfilment of those things which were told her from the Lord”. Look! The Angel told her “Do not be afraid, Mary. You will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son and shall call His name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Highest”. That was the time in which Mary did not know who her husband would be and there was no chance for her to give birth to a child. But she became blessed for believing what God said.
You also believe God at all times even when you are not able to see things through your five senses. Things will be fulfilled definitely.
To meditate: “when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, that the babe leaped in her womb” (Luke 1:41).
