“By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to the place which he would receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going” (Hebrews 11:8).
Among the saints of the Old Testament, different saints possessed different kinds of faith. Everyone’s faith differed from that of the others. What was the faith of Abraham? It was just relying upon God one hundred percent. So, he departed to the nation shown by God, leaving his nation, people and his father’s home.
March 20th of August, 1985 is an unforgettable day in my life. We had completed ten years of married life on that day and on that day my fourth son was born. Above all, that was the day on which I resigned my job and came down to carry out fulltime ministry.
My faith was also on “He will guide.” I did not rely on my brother, sister or any other relative but came to the ministry placing my entire hope on God. It was not an easy thing to do. But God honoured that decision of mine. Though I faced numerous oppositions, struggles and problems, God of Abraham did not let me down. He guided me greatly.
The faith of Abraham was much greater. How hard it is to shift from a place and keep on moving towards an unknown destination along with all the belongings and the cattle! The journey was across many nations. That was a time when there were no legal restrictions on law and order and even the safety of Abraham’s wife might have been in jeopardy.
But with all faith, Abraham believed that God who gave a call is faithful and dwelled in Him holding His hand. For this is God, Our God forever and ever; He will be our guide even to death. Abraham had placed so much of faith in God and hence God allowed to be called as “God of Abraham.” Abraham became the father of the believers. These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off were assured of them, embraced them and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth (Hebrews 11:13).
“And truly if they had called to mind that country from which they had come out, they would have had the opportunity to return. But now they desire a better, that is, a heavenly country” (Hebrews 11:15, 16).
Dear children of God, having come as the descendant of Abraham, you have found a place in the ancestry of faith. Thus you are worshipping Christ who is Abraham’s son as well as God. The faith of Abraham is very much needed in you.
To meditate: “By faith he dwelt in the land of promise as in a foreign country, dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise” (Hebrews 11:9).
