“And since we have the same spirit of faith, according to what is written, “I believed and therefore I spoke, we also believe and therefore speak” (II Corinthians 4:13).
The above verse is an amazing one, Paul the Apostle says ‘believed,’ then says ‘we have the Spirit of faith’ and then ‘we believe and therefore we speak’. When does this ‘Spirit of faith’ come? You receive this when you get the gift of the Spirit.
We have been meditating on several types of faith. Natural faith is there. The fundamental faith placed in God, the faith of shield, the faith which is the fruit of Spirit and the faith of anchor are there. Here Paul the Apostle writes about the gift of Spirit.
The faith which is the gift of Spirit will never be idle and it will always be working. It will proceed as a frontrunner to all other types of faith. It will not stay calm and quiet like the fruit of the Spirit. This gift of faith is a functioning gift. This is the gift which works for the eyes of the world to see. “What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him?” (James 2:14). Yes. The faith should reflect either in deed or work.
One devotee keeps boastfully proclaiming that he has strong faith. One day he went to some villages on the hill top for preaching about faith and on his way back home he slipped and fell down from the hill top on a tree. Fortunately, his life was saved. The pit below the tree was too deep and he was hanging above it holding to a branch of the tree and screamed “God, save me.”
Then the thin voice of God was heard. He said, “son, believe me, and leave your hand.” But the man had his own doubts and fears. He said “How can I do that God? Will I not fall and break into pieces? Don’t you know God?, Save me.” He went on praying that way. God kept silent. The hand pained and his hold on the branch began to loosen. The branch also broke. The man fell down into the pit shouting “my God, my God.”
Fortunately, a few days back a movie shooting group had laid a net for their shooting purpose and the falling man fell on it and thus was saved without any injury. The man lamented “Oh I did not know this otherwise I would have left the branch much earlier. All the other gifts are functioning only on the basis of faith. If the gift of ‘Faith’ is kept idle without putting to use, then all the other eight gifts could not function. Dear children of God, you too receive that faith prayerfully.
To meditate: “But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit” (I Corinthians 12:7, 9).
