“A certain young man named Eutychus, who was sinking into a deep sleep. ……… he fell down from the third story and was taken up dead” (Acts 20:9).
When the Tamil month of ‘Puratasi’ comes, the Hindus will celebrate a festival in which they will exhibit dolls of several sizes and different colours and arrange them in steps. During my college days, I used to visit such Brahmin streets with my friends and see the arrangements of dolls. These families used to offer snacks to the visitors and so it was not only a pastime for us but a funny experience too. These dolls of different sizes will stay in the steps motionless and they cannot move here and there.
Similar to these dolls, there are many people who stay idle without doing ministry to God. Some will be lame and some may be handicapped. They will be accusing others and stay at one place without any progress in their spiritual life.
Eutychus is a youth who appears only once in the entire Bible. Paul the Apostle was delivering God’s message from the third floor of a house located in the city of Troas. Paul was a very good speaker and was good at preaching the truths of the Scripture in depth. But while he was preaching nothing went into the ears of Eutychus and his heart too was not longing to hear the Word of God. Thus he slumbered and slept.
We read in Acts 20:7 that it was the first day of the week and the day on which the disciples came together to break bread. There are people who sleep when the Word of God is shared. Some go asleep when the Scripture is read and there are people who sleep while worshipping. But this Eutychus slept during the time of Holy Communion itself. Jesus who was the bread of life was not able to go into him. Jesus broke His body through the death of suffering at Calvary and these blessings did not go into Eutychus. What a pity!
There were many lamps in the upper room. But their brightness did not help Eutychus to shine in his life. Eutychus stayed with the children of God and he was called a believer also. But the sleep had covered him with darkness
Sleep is of many kinds and some sleep makes one to slumber and leads to death. The spiritual death is more horrible than the physical death. God termed the bodily sleep as ‘death.’ Those who die spiritually will be thrown into the lake which burns with fire and brimstone. It was fortunate, as Paul was there he resurrected Eutychus and gave him another opportunity to rise and shine for God. Dear children of God do not be like those dolls kept on the steps but be a person who will toil hard for God.
To meditate: “I know your works, that you have a name that you are alive, but you are dead. Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die” (Revelation 3:1, 2).
