“Now when the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and behold, horror and great darkness fell upon him” (Genesis 15:12)
Abraham, the forefather was offering the sacrifice. Then the vultures came down on the carcasses. Here the ‘vulture’ means the evil spirits and the demons. Similar to this in the parable of ‘sower’, the birds took away the seeds which fell on the wayside just making the seeds useless. In that sacrifice, Abraham was eagerly waiting for the fire of God to descend. But as time passed by Abraham fell asleep. “Now when the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and behold, horror and great darkness fell upon him” (Genesis 15:12).
When Job writes about deep sleep he says “In disquieting thoughts from the visions of the night, when deep sleep falls on men, fear came upon me, and trembling, which made all my bones shake” (Job 4:13, 14).
In the Scripture, the first person to cross the path of deep sleep is Adam. When God conducted a surgery on his back and took out a rib from him to create Eve, the Bible says the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam and he slept (A sleep similar to death). Jesus Christ was also already dead when He was pierced at the back. Thus He willed to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood (Acts 20:28).
The second person to go into deep sleep was Daniel. For the divine vision and to eliminate the thoughts of flesh, Daniel was in need of deep sleep. He points out “As he was speaking with me, I was in a deep sleep with my face to the ground; but he touched me, and stood me upright” (Daniel 8:18). Yes, dear children of God, when God makes contact with you or when God gives you dreams and visions or even during the prayer time, deep sleep may come to you. At that time be prepared to understand the will of God. God will let you know the future.
At the same time, there is a distressful deep sleep also. Jonah had gone down into the lowest parts of the ship, had lain down and was fast asleep (Jonah 1:5). Because of this deep sleep, he was not aware of the storm which blew outside, the turbulence of the sea and the loss faced in respect of the cargo of the ship.
There is a deep sleep of good nature too. It is the time in which God shares revelations and visions with you. In this way, when Abraham went into deep sleep, God prophetically spoke to him about his descendants. It is a blessed sleep.
To meditate: “Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I did not know it” (Genesis 28:16).
