Helmet!

“Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God” (Ephesians 6:17).

The soldiers will be wearing a helmet on their head as a protection. Even today, it is the order of the Government that all who drive a two wheeler should wear helmets. The helmet is a protective gear which protects itself. Of all the organs in a man, the head is the most important and it needs to be protected.

An old Tamil saying also says that in the entire length of the human body, the head is the most important one. The precious brain is in the head and the eyes which provide beautiful vision also find place in the head. The nose which smells, the mouth wich tastes and the ears which hear are also in the head only. So helmet for the head is very essential.

When a man was walking on a road, he did not notice a hawk picking a poisonous snake and flying towards the sky. There was a struggle between the two in the sky and resultantly the hawk dropped the snake from the sky and it fell right on the head of the walking man. On falling, it bit the man’s head several times and killed him. If at all he had been wearing a helmet he would have escaped from the danger which came from the sky.

We do not know what will fall on us from the above. Sometimes stones may fall. Or the fiery darts of the wicked one may fall. So, wear a helmet and protect yourself from all evil thoughts and lusts which tempt you from the head.

Paul the Apostle writes about several kinds of weapons of war in 6th chapter of the book of Ephesians and when coming to helmet he names it as ‘Salvation.’ He points out as “Let us be sober, putting on faith and love as a breastplate and the hope of salvation as a helmet (I Thessalonians 5:8). In the Old Testament, Prophet Isaiah says “He put on righteousness as his breastplate and the helmet of salvation on his head; he put on the garments of vengeance and wrapped himself in zeal as in a cloak” (Isaiah 59:17).

When the enemy attacks from beneath, we crush him on the floor with our footwear. We wear shields on the chest to protect from the arrows and spears which are aimed on our chests. At the same time it is essential for us to wear the helmet so that we can protect ourselves while resisting the onslaught of satan carried out from the heavenly places. Even Goliath who was a Philistine was wearing a helmet to protect his head.

Dear children of God, let Salvation be your head gear and not the worldly helmet. That head gear will protect all your thoughts and intentions in Jesus Christ.

To meditate: “Harness the horses and mount up, you horsemen! Stand forth with your helmets, polish the spears, Put on the armour” (Jeremiah 46:4).
