“…Above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one” (Ephesians 6:16).
The shield is one of the weapons of war. There are two kinds of weapon. One is protective weapons like shield, helmet, girdle and footwear. The other one is weapons which are used to attack like arrows, spear and the sword. You need both these kinds of weapons.
God will be your shield. He will be your refuge and the fortress. He will protect you and command victory for you. God promised Abraham and said “Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your exceedingly great reward” (Genesis 15:1).
Lot was a relative of Abraham and he was once imprisoned by certain kings. On hearing this, Abraham called out the 318 trained men born in his household and went in pursuit and he routed them thus releasing Lot and his family.
How was Abraham so brave even at that age? He was always confident that God was his shield. Similar to this Paul the Apostle also experienced the presence of God and said “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13).
We read about many strong men in the Bible. A warrior may be strong to whatever extent but even then a shield is highly essential for his protection. We read in II Samuel 1:21 as “shield of the mighty”. Goliath who was a mighty man among the Philistines was wearing a bronze armour on his legs and a bronze javelin between his shoulders (I Samuel 17:6). But even those bronze armouries did not protect Goliath. The stone slung by David hit him on the forehead and he fell like a tree without roots.
Not the worldly shield, dear children of God. May the Lord Himself be your great strength and the shield. Who else is as mighty as He is? Bible says “Behold, the Lord GOD shall come with a strong hand, and His arm shall rule for Him; behold, His reward is with Him, and His work before Him” (Isaiah 40:10). “The LORD shall go forth like a mighty man; He shall stir up His zeal like a man of war. He shall cry out, yes, shout aloud; He shall prevail against His enemies”(Isaiah 42:13).
Today, the world leaders like the President and Prime Minister have employed security personnel like a shield to them. They are well trained and are prepared even to sacrifice their lives for the sake of protecting the leaders. Dear children of God, May God Himself be your shield and personal security.
To meditate: “But the Lord is with me as a mighty, awesome One. Therefore my persecutors will stumble, and will not prevail. They will be greatly ashamed, for they will not prosper.”(Jeremiah 20:11).
