love of a friend!

“Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends. You are my friends if you do whatever I command you” (John 15:13, 14).

God calls you with love as ‘friend.’ His love is the love of a perfect friend. “Ointment and perfume delight the heart and the sweetness of a man’s friend gives delight by hearty counsel” (Proverbs 27:9).

“A friend loves at all times” (Proverbs 17:17). There are close friends who would be prepared to sacrifice even their lives for the sake of a friend. A good friend will offer the required counselling to his counterpart and guide him with love. When one involves in wrong doings, it is his friend who will condemn with authority. Further, for the whole of his life, he will always show care for the friend’s elevation and growth.

One can rely on a friend and talk to him open-mindedly. All the problems and struggles could be shared with. Dear children of God, if at all there is a perfect friend in this world, it is none but Jesus Christ only. That friend is one who gave His life for our sake. He is a friend who poured out even the last drop of blood for our sake.

Jesus called Lazarus also as His friend (John 11:11). At the same time, Judas who was a traitor was also addressed as ‘friend’ by God (Mathew 26:50). But Judas did not deserve this love. He kissed Jesus as a mark of betrayal and thus showed His disloyalty. The prophetic word “I was wounded in the house of my friends” was fulfilled (Zachariah 13:6).

God called Abraham as His friend at three instances in the Bible. (James 2:23). Abraham implicitly obeyed to that love and walked with God as a perfect friend. Because of this, God revealed all the secrets to Abraham saying “Shall I hide from Abraham what I am doing”. God heard the prayer of His friend Abraham and saved Lot from the destruction of Sodom.

Bible says that God loved Moses also as His friend. “So the Lord spoke to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend” (Exodus 33:11). God said “Not so with my servant Moses; he is faithful in all my house. I speak with him face to face, even plainly, and not in dark sayings; and he sees the form of the Lord” (Numbers 12:7, 8).

You can speak to God as His own children and as His brother too. But God is holding the high status of calling you as ‘His friend’. One who moved as a friend to Abraham and Moses likes to maintain such a friendship with you also. Will you accept His love and walk together with Him? “A man who has friends must himself be friendly” (Proverbs 18:24).

To meditate: “I have called you friends, for all things that I heard from my Father I have made known to you” (John 15:15).
