“Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good” (Romans 12:21)
A man will never get disheartened if he has Divine Love in his heart. He will not seek self-sympathy by saying “Alas, how treacherously these people are troubling me.” He will place his faith in God by saying that all things work together for good, to those who love. With that hope, he will lean on God. At a later stage, that was how Joseph praised God by telling his brothers “But as for you, you meant evil against me; but God meant it for good” (Genesis 50:20)
There is a funny story. Once there was a competition between the wind and the sun. It was to prove their might they have, to make a man remove his coat which he is wearing. The wind was the first one to try. It took the form of a swirling wind and blew around him with force and tried to remove the coat from him. But more the velocity of the wind more tightly the man clung to his coat. In the end, the wind lost the contest.
Then it was the sun’s turn. It did not handle any rough or wild means. Slowly it began to increase the heat of its rays and focussed them on him. Within a short duration, the heat rose to an unbearable level and the man himself removed his coat saying ‘how hot it was.’’ The sun won the competition.
It is easy to make a person yield by love than by dictatorial ways. Jesus Christ reformed many persons with His love of Calvary whom the legislations, society, government or the prisons could not reform. The missionaries went in search of even the uncivilised cannibals who were indulging in the barbaric act of eating human beings. They showed their love even to them, guided them in the path of Salvation and brought them into divine love. Even today we are able to see wild animals being made to bow through love. We have seen even the lions and the elephants responding obediently to commands of love.
Jesus Christ said, “But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you” (Mathew 5:44). Dear children of God, may you not try to overcome the evil by evil but overcome the evil with good. In the beginning, it may appear as though the evil will emerge as triumphant. But love has a huge constructive power in it. The Love attracts and pulls the heart of others.
Not only that, even the wicked will humble and bend their knees before love. So let all your deeds be with divine love. Then you will definitely attain success after success.
To meditate: “Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil. Cling to what is good” (Romans 12:9).
