“He who abides in love abides in God, and God in him” (I John 4:16)
Some years ago, a missionary came to India and planted many churches through ministry. He had been filled with love. He used to preach about the sacrificial love of Jesus Christ. The people loved him a lot since he showed true love, care and compassion towards them.
One day a pastor of the allied church came to him and told “Pastor, there is an elder in my church for whom I have done a lot of good things and have showed love too. But in spite of all my goodwill, he always keeps talking against me and he tries to dig a pit for my downfall. How long I could tolerate this?”
After listening patiently to the missionary, Pastor said “Let me tell you one thing. You simply multiply your present love towards him. Just immerse him in your flood of love. There is no human being who cannot be enslaved through love.” This advice brought the problem between them to an immediate halt.
A woman from a family also came to him seeking his counselling. She said “Sir, My parents have given me in marriage to a cruel animal. Indeed he had money but he was devoid of all good qualities. He stays with me with the sole purpose of fulfilling his personal desires selfishly and I never receive any true love from him. So I am planning to seek divorce from him.”
The pastor’s reply to her was “daughter, meditate more about the love of Calvary. Increase the quantum of love you show towards your husband. Then everything will change for good.” The woman acted in accordance with the pastor’s advice and her increased love made the family prosper. Whoever go to him for counselling, his instant advice was to ‘increase the dosage of love.’
Once Peter put a question to Jesus “how many times am I should forgive my brother? Will seven times be enough?” But God advised him to increase the depth of the love of forgiving. His advice was to forgive seven times of seventy times.
Christ has completely filled us with the love of forgiving. Not limited to seven times of seventy times. When one comes to Him with a broken heart and tears, His divine love cleanses all the crime or sin, however worst they may be.
Jesus Christ said “As the Father loved me, I also have loved you; abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in His love” (John 15:9, 10)
To meditate: “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you” (John 15:12).
