‘So the Lord spoke to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend.”(Exodus 33:11)
In the Old Testament, the highest position for a saint is ‘ a friend of God.’ In the New Testament it is ‘the bride of Christ’. “…the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. (Revelation 21:2). God loves us with His everlasting love. He draws us with loving kindness (Jeremiah 31:3). He is a powerful God but He is our Father and He is a friend of soul to us.
The word ‘friend’ has deep and lovely meaning. In Tamil there is a old saying “a friend will give his life.’ God’s friendship came into existence even before the creation of the world. He loved them to the end. (John 13:1). God called Moses as his friend. the Lord spoke to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend (Exodus 33:11). I speak with him face to face, Even plainly, and not in dark sayings;” (Numbers 12:8).
When Moses was eighty years old, God appeared to him in a flame of fire from the midst of a bush and made Moses His friend. (Exodus 3:2). God did not mind his weaknesses like slow of speech and slow of tongue. God guided His children of Israel for forty years by using Moses as their shepherd. God honoured Moses, made him great before the eyes of the people of Israel and exalted him.
Moses also remained deserving to God’s such great love to the end. He stood in the breach and pleaded for the children of Israel. Many a time the life of the children of Israel was saved as a result. It was Moses through whom Gad made the first five books of the Bible to be written.
When Moses died, God himself stood in front and buried the body. In the New Testament God brought Moses to the Mount of Transfiguration. On one side were the three disciples of Christ and on the other side were Moses and Elijah and all of them were talking about the death of Christ. Not only that. We read about the song which is sung in the heaven vide chapter 15 of the book of Revelation. They sing the song of Moses, the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying: “Great and marvellous are your works, Lord God Almighty! Just and true are your ways, O King of the saints! (Revelation 15:3)
Dear children of God, the Lord walks like a friend with you. “A man who has friends must himself be friendly, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother. (Proverbs 18:24).
To meditate: And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “Abraham believed God and it was accounted to him for righteousness.” And he was called the friend of God. (James 2:23).
