“….through faith (they) subdued kingdoms.” (Hebrews 11:33)
Faith is required to receive the promises too. What is a promise? These are the assurances given by our heavenly God. They are the ‘will documents’ executed by God in your favour.
John Banyan is the author of the famous book titled ‘Voyage to heaven’ and he has found that there are thirty thousand promises in the Bible. Though the number is huge, God is capable of fulfilling all of them. “For all the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him Amen, to the glory of God through us” (II Corinthians 1:20).
Some of God’s promises are the ones which were given voluntarily by God himself by His mercy, grace and sympathy. There are some promises which are the ones the children of God have received through fighting with God through prayer.
When Jacob crossed the ford of Jabbok, he was alone and was afraid of his brother. He fought with God for the whole night. He kept on pleading to God saying “I will not let you go unless You bless me!” Yes. That night he received the promises from God through his faith. Jacob became Israelite from that moment. One who was grazing sheep was exalted as a forefather to Hebrews.
Dear children of God, be faithful that God will definitely fulfil the promises which you had received through your faith. Not even a single Good word of him has ever failed. If you do not catch hold of the promises, you will wither when the wind of trial blows. You will be surrounded by diffidence and disbelief. That day Christ posed the question “Where is your faith?” to His disciples (Luke 8:25).
When a windstorm came down on the lake and the boats were filling with water the disciples did not catch hold of God’s promises. If they had caught hold of the promise “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow you” (Isaiah 43:2) they would not have feared over the situation. They forgot the promise and were overcome by disbelief.
When you go to Church, go with the expectation, through which scripture portion God is going to talk with you. If God gives a promise to you there catch hold of it tightly. Heaven and earth will pass away, but his promises will by no means pass away.
To meditate: “So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” (Romans 10:17).
