our refuge!

“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble” (Psalm 46:1).

When the children of Israel entered into Canaan after being releases from Egypt God told them to appoint cities as cities of refuge for them. (Numbers 35:9-28). The manslayer who kills any person accidentally may flee there. The avenger of blood himself shall put the murderer to death; when he meets him, he shall put him to death.

Even today we see in accidents, when a lorry driver accidentally kills a child on the road, he escapes from the site and takes refuge in the nearest Police Station. Otherwise the spectators in the accident site would beat hem and may even kill him.

David saw a refuge in God. What a great blessing it is to sit with God when one is chased by sins, curses and demons. He writes “The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold” (Psalm 18:2). Solomon also says “The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe” (Proverbs 18:10).

Once there was a big storm in a locality. The wind was so strong that many trees were uprooted and the roofs of many huts went flying. The damages caused were extensive. One who had been staying in a safe and protected house came out and was looking at the things flying. At that time a big branch broke out from a tree and fell right on the head of the man. He died immediately.

David says “Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me! for my soul trusts in You; and in the shadow of Your wings I will make my refuge, until these calamities have passed by” (Psalm 57:1). Isaiah also says “You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You (Isaiah 26:3).

Dear children of God your glorious refuge is the Cross of Calvary. Christ’s wounds are your hiding place. His body is like the clefts of the rock. Just hide lake a dove in it.

To meditate: “Because he has set his love upon me, therefore I will deliver him;
I will set him on high, because he has known my Name” (Psalm 91:14).
