“…. when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered Him to be crucified (Matthew 27:26).
Jesus was taken into custody and was enquired while He was praying in the garden of Gethsemane. First He was brought to Annas and Caiaphas who were the high priests. On the next day He was taken to Pontius and then to Herod and then back to Pontius. Then he released Barabbas to them; and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered Him to be crucified (Matthew 27:26).
Jesus was taken to the most cruel place in the palace of Pontius where the criminals were interrogated. The romans usually remove the garments of the criminal before scourging. The hands of the criminals will be lifted and tied. Then two soldiers will stand on either side of the criminal and begin to scourge.
According to this practise of Romans, Jesus was beaten 39 times. Even today this practise of whipping and lashing prevails in many countries. In countries like Saudi Arabia and Singapore the whips are soaked in chemicals before lashing. If one is lashed for eight to ten times, the punishment makes him useless in all senses and thereafter he will be a burden to earth.
Jesus Christ was undefiled and when He was lashed, His back would have been torn. The ploughers ploughed on my back; they made their furrows long.” (Psalm 129:3). The blood which comes out from the wounds caused by whipping is similar to the balm of Gilead. It is powerful to cure everyone’s diseases. “…..who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness—by whose stripes you were healed” (I Peter 2:24). “… His stripes we are healed” (Isaiah 53:5).
“….that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying: “He Himself took our infirmities and bore our sicknesses” (Matthew 8:17). When you are unwell and cry out of agony, God will pour His precious blood on you and says “son, I will bear your sickness and diseases. Since I have already bore them it is not required for you to bear them again.” Saying this, He gives miraculous healing to you.
Once world famous doctors and scientists assembled for a workshop to identify and list out the dreadful diseases and the diseases for which medicines had not been invented till then. They were able to list out 39 diseases under this category. Yes, God not only forgave your sins and iniquities but also bore the stripes to bless you with good health.
To meditate: “Who forgives all your iniquities, Who heals all your diseases, Who redeems your life from destruction, Who crowns you with loving kindness and tender mercies, Who satisfies your mouth with good things, So that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s” (Psalm 103:3-5).
