“Now Jericho was securely shut up because of the children of Israel; none went out, and none came in” (Joshua 6:1).
The children of Israel who inherited the promise and marched with a strength similar to that of a wild ox towards Jericho. That was the first city they came across. The walls of Jericho blocked them from entering. The doors of bronze challenged them. But God who breaks open stood with the children of Israel.
The first hurdle was from a man Pharaoh. The second hurdle came from a sea. The third hurdle came from the flood of a river. The fourth hurdle was from the walls of a city. The hurdles may differ but one who break opens them is one and the same. He is the same yesterday, today and for ever. He is alive and strong and He is with you.
Jericho is a special city in the valley of Jordan. The historians believe that the civilization came to the world from that city only. Jericho means “a place where the date trees are in plenty. But there were so many curses on Jericho. When Joshua captured it he said about the curses on it. God Himself had warned that all things there were with curse and nothing should be touched.
In many families numerous hurdles arise due to the curses. Children are not getting married in time; good employments are always elusive; the blessing of child birth is not there; the business efforts are never successful. The iron bolts and the bronze doors may block you.
Today call the Lord who could break open. “What are you, O mighty mountain? Before Zerubbabel you will become level ground. Then he will bring out the capstone to shouts of ‘God bless it! God bless it!'” (Zachariah 4:7). What are you O mighty Goliath? Before Zerubbabel you will become level ground. What are you O mighty Jericho? Before Zerubbabel you will become level ground.
What was the idea God taught to break open Jericho? The priests shall blow the trumpets. The people shall shout with great shout. Then the wall of the city will fall down flat (Joshua 6:2, 5). The weapon God gave to break the Jericho hurdle was the sound of worship. He is not in need of sparrow, arrow or warriors on horse. His only requirement is ‘Praising God’.
God’s presence descends when we praise raising our voice. One who dwells in praises comes down. Then the walls of Jericho will break and fall down. Dear children of God, bring the sound of praise in your life too. All the hurdles like the walls of Jericho are going to break and fall down.
To meditate: “Shout joyfully to the Lord, all the earth; break forth in song, rejoice, and sing praises. with trumpets and the sound of a horn; shout joyfully before the Lord, the King(Psalm 98:4, 6).
