“And she bore him a son. He called his name Gershom, for he said, “I have been a stranger in a foreign land” (Exodus 2:22).
The meaning for the Hebrew word Gershom is “I have been a stranger in a foreign land.” Now what is the statement that comes out of the mouth of Moses? “I am a foreigner and a visitor among you in this world”.
The dwelling of the spiritual children of God is in heaven. We have been eagerly waiting for Jesus to descend and to meet Him in the air. “For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ”. (Philippians 3:20). Jesus Christ lived in this world like a foreigner and a visitor. He told the disciples “My kingdom is not of this world. For this cause I was born and for this cause I have come into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears my voice” (John 18:37).
You need to pronounce this statement always. You may possess many lands, houses and properties in this world. But you should know that in this world you are a foreigner and a traveling man to heaven. The life in this world will look like few seconds if you think of the eternal life you will have in future. It is similar to the grass which flourishes and grows in the morning and withers in the evening. Keeping this in mind Abraham, Isaac and Jacob though they were rich they lived in portable tents. They declared that they were foreigners and visitors.
While beginning to write his epistle, Paul the Apostle writes “To the pilgrims of the Dispersion” (I Peter 1:1). What was His advice? “And if you call on the Father, who without partiality judges according to each one’s work, conduct yourselves throughout the time of your stay here in fear”. (I Peter 1:17).
“Beloved, I beg you as sojourners and pilgrims abstain from fleshly lusts which war against the soul, having your conduct honourable among the Gentiles, that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may, by your good works which they observe, glorify God in the day of visitation” I Peter 2:11, 12).
Moses was a good spiritual person and was always remembering that he was a visitor. Dear children of God, let your eyes be always on heaven and not on this world. Save all yiour treasures in heaven. Do your name finds place in the ‘Book of Life’?
“For here we have no continuing city, but we seek the one to come” (Hebrews 13:14).
