“So Abram said to Lot, “Please let there be no strife between you and me, and between my herdsmen and your herdsmen; for we are brethren” (Genesis 13:8).
Abraham is one chosen by God and had calling as well. God promised Abraham a son and thereby a posterity. He also promised the fertile land of Canaan. Lot who was Abraham’s brother’s son attached himself with Abraham and his vision. Abraham and lot possessed huge number of livestock, gold and silver. “Now the land was not able to support them, that they might dwell together, for their possessions were so great that they could not dwell together” (Genesis 13:6). Now the shortfall created quarrels between the shepherds of Abraham and Lot.
Lot kept silent over this quarrel but Abraham who was matured in spiritual life brought a solution to this issue. “So Abram said to Lot, “Please let there be no strife between you and me, and between my herdsmen and your herdsmen; for we are brethren.” Genesis 13:8). Generally in most of the homes there will be struggles between husband and wife or between brothers and sisters over properties or loans. During such situations how do you react? Do you let out anger and hatred? Is satan able to sow the deed of bitterness within you? “The beginning of strife is like releasing water; therefore stop contention before a quarrel starts” (Proverbs 17:14).
I have witnessed certain quarrels. Husband will shout at his wife to shut her mouth. The wife will retort by asking her husband to shut his mouth first. Then the quarrel will intensify and end in husband beating his wife and in response the wife leaving for her mother’s home leaving the husband. But look at Abraham! How patient and loving was he in expressing Christ’s model and equanimity. You also should resolve to remain as a spiritual character with adjusting quality like that of Abraham’s.
Once, two harlots came to King Solomon with a case. Both of them made a claim of ownership to a child. King Solomon had been equipped with godly wisdom and he ordered to divide the child into two with a sword and give one piece to each of the claimants. This idea brought the fact of who the real mother was, to the fore and the child was handed over to its mother.
Dear children of God, never indulge in unwanted arguments and do not murmur. Never have the hatred too. Always give importance to the precious spiritual blessings of the Lord than the mere worldly blessings.
To meditate: “But if anyone seems to be contentious we have no such custom nor do the churches of God.” (I Corinthians 11:16)
