“This cup is the new covenant in my blood. This does as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” (I Corinthians 11:25).
Of all the covenants, the one we make with the Lord is the most important. That too the covenant of blood is higher to everything. In the time of the Old Testament, people were circumcised and made covenant with the blood dropping from the foreskin.
What was the reason behind David’s bravery when Goliath came against the children of Israel? “I have circumcised and with that made a covenant with the Lord. He is a true God and the covenant with Him will always be honoured. So He has to stand by me and fight for me. This Goliath is an uncircumcised outsider. He worships the idols. He can never win over me” These thoughts helped David to overcome Goliath.
Abraham had not been circumcised when he united with Hagar. Si Ismael was born of flesh without covenant. Before the birth of Isaac, Abraham was circumcised. So the tradition is a spiritual one. Since Ishmael was born before covenant “He shall be a wild man; his hand shall be against every man, and every man’s hand against him. And he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren” (Genesis 16:12). What was the prophecy about him? “His hand shall be against every man and every man’s hand against him”. The world is in turbulence because of the ancestors of Ismael. The Muslims are violent within themselves and kill each other. They are straining the world with blood.
Today we covenant with the priceless blood of Jesus and not with the blood of the animals. We take refuge in the blood of Jesus. “Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him” (Romans 5:9). “The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ? (I Corinthians 10:16).
Dear children of God, you are God’s children born of Holy Spirit. Born of the blood of Jesus. You are the children of the promises. Through all these things ‘and all that He has’ is yours. “But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ” (Ephesians 2:13).
To meditate: “and by Him to reconcile all things to Himself, by Him, whether things on earth or things in heaven, having made peace through the blood of His cross” (Colossians 1:20).
