Ever with me!

“For this my son was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ And they began to be merry” (Luke 15:24).

The father kissed the son who had come back from hid prodigal life. He gave him a ring, good robes, and sandals too. The son was also given a feast with fatted calf. Music and dancing was also there. All these things happened because of the father’s love and affection.

But the elder son did not understand it. Though patient on one side he was furious on the other side. He said “Lo, these many years I have been serving you; I never transgressed your commandment at any time; and yet you never gave me a young goat that I might make merry with my friends.  But as soon as this son of yours came, who has devoured your livelihood with harlots; you killed the fatted calf for him.’

He questioned his father further. “Are they fools who have lived righteously right from the early stage? All will lead a wretched life and at the time of death have a change of heart with the hope that they can reach God. All these welcome with garlands, feasts and dances are only to those who involve in presumptuous sins. You are a loving father indeed but no more righteousness.”

Then the father with the intention to balance both the sides said “Son, I am not going to partition the property again. I am not going to give any part of your share to him. Dear son, you are always with me and all of mine are yours.” In other words what he said was “I am yours and you are mine. My presence, my blessings and all other things owned by me are yours”. What a great justice?

He also said “It is also necessary for you to love your brother. Your brother was dead and is alive again. He was lost and is found. So this is a joyous occasion for us.”

Even the Pharisees and the Sadducees of those days did not approve sinners relenting and coming back to Jesus. They did not approve the prodigal sons getting rings and other gifts. Bur our loving Lord Jesus Christ is so eager to embrace those who repent for their sins and come into the right path. He is also willing to provide all His blessings who live righteously right from the beginning.

To meditate: – “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things.  But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her” (Luke 10:41,42).
