“Do not set your mind on high things, but associate with the humble. Do not be wise in your own opinion” (Romans 12:16).

It is proud which sets the mind on high things. This mind makes them despise others. They never move with people at a lower status. This brings divisions in the church. Jesus Christ is not a person to look at the face but He looks at the heart. He` said “See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father in heaven” (Mathew 18:10).

See the rich man’s case in the Bible. He was dressed in purple and fine linen in luxury every day. Due to proudness he despised Lazarus who was a poor man and who had been lying on the door steps of the rich man. Lazarus was longing to eat what fell from the rich man’s table. When the beggar died the angels carried him to Abraham’s side and he was comforted. When the rich man died he was in torment and was longing for even a drop of water. So never be proud.

Once there was a king and he received a complaint that his minister was very proud and he carried I box filled with costly diamonds and pearls even when he was riding his horse. The king wanted to know the truth and once he asked the minister to open the box. When the box was opened there were a few old clothes. The minister said that he was a very poor man when the king made him a minister and he had preserved all these old clothes safely so that the present status of minister do not make him forget his past poor status.

One day the Lord told the children of Israel “….then your heart will become proud and you will forget the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. He led you through the vast and dreadful wilderness, that thirsty and waterless land, with its venomous snakes and scorpions. He brought you water out of hard rock. He gave you manna to eat in the wilderness, something your ancestors had never known, to humble and test you so that in the end it might go well with you” (Deuteronomy 8:14, 15, 16).

Lucifer who had been called as the ‘morning star’ when he was in heaven fell into the hell later. Do you know why? It was only because of his proudness and high thinking. He wanted to pierce those qualities into the mankind. Adam and Eve were tempted by him with false promises and they were caught in his trap. Resultantly they disobeyed God, committed sin and lost everything. You also ensure that the proudness do not enter into your mind, look and speech too.

To meditate: “Talk no more so very proudly; let no arrogance come from your mouth, for the Lord is the God of knowledge; and by Him actions are weighed” (I Samuel 2:3).
